Science Center Grant

AT&T recently awarded a $50,000 to the university to finance the development of a new online chemistry resource designed for high school students. University faculty and students will develop “data-driven” online modules to help with chemistry instruction in high school. The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to increase the number of college students and scientists in the physical sciences. The Hatters led most of the game until the fourth inning when KSU’s Klair Wells hit her fourth home run of the year tying the score 1-1. “Our computer was stolen from the station on March 9 between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m.” WHAT Radio Chair Alex Harney said. “The last DJ to see the computer was Dr. King, who hosts a punk music segment from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays.” Full story

Deliberative Opinion Poll: More Affordable Education

On Monday, two-hundred Stetson students were invited to participate in a deliberative opinion poll as an initiative to involve students in the university’s politics. The main focus: how do we make a Stetson education more affordable? The poll was put on by a combination of students and faculty, with the idea sparked by class discussions of “participatory democracy” in a Stetson course titled Community Organizing for Social Change. This particular poll was meant as a “test run” to see if a greater Volusia County Deliberative Opinion Poll would be effective. The whole event lasted for three hours, and provided cultural credit and free food for those who participated. A large amount of students turned out for the event, as well as faculty members, representatives from multiple student organizations, and outside media.

The White Tie Affair

Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, The White Tie Affair has emerged as a force to be reckoned with.  Their debut album “Walk This Way” includes their hit singles “Allow Me to Introduce Myself… Mr. Right” and “Candle (Sick and Tired).”  Last year, they were asked to perform at the Playboy Mansion for their Pajama Party.  They’ve recently been touring the states with Lady Gaga, and summer will find them rocking the stages of Warped Tour.

Before their April 6 performance at the House of Blues Orlando, the four members of the band (Sean P, Chris, Ryan, and Tim) met with me to discuss their roots, tour life, and rocking out inside the gates of the Playboy Mansion.

Hatters relinquish perfect conference record

The men’s tennis team (16-6) suffered 5-2 and 6-1 losses to 59th nationally ranked ETSU and 72nd ranked USC upstate, dropping their perfect conference record to 7-2.

ETSU’s 12th nationally ranked singles player Enrique Olivares, also ranked 68th in doubles with partner Alex Ahlgren, brought the heat to the Hatters’ courts.

Despite the 8-6 doubles win by Filip Kricka and Maksim Levanovich, ETSU snagged the doubles point with a prior 8-4 defeat over Mark Mestan and Cesare Gallo.

Art Center Opens

The Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center opened and was dedicated on Friday, April 3. The new art building provides a proud new home to the university’s Bluemner Collection as well as additional exhibition space for art students and faculty.

Oscar Bluemner was an American modernist painter whose outstanding art was overlooked during his lifetime. However, his daughter, Vera Bluemner Kouba, recognized her father’s talent and continued to push for his recognition even after his death. Today Bluemner is widely acknowledged as one of the key figures in American art in the first part of the 20th century,

Restoring the Student Voice

From the selection of Wendy Libby as Stetson’s first woman President, to the physical changes we’ve seen on campus, the 125th anniversary of our university has certainly been a year of transformation. Now, another transformation is in the works for Stetson, as SGA has their elections for vice-president in the coming weeks. While SGAs reputation for appearing seemingly inactive or possessing a dormant voice, their upcoming elections present an opportunity for the students to transform those false-assumptions by selection candidates that will return the student voice Stetson’s governance.

With 71 million dollars in the box office, the Fast & Furious has surely given reason to make yet another comeback. The action and edge of your seat adrenaline is accompanied with imported and hooked up vehicles that could easily entice any car fetishist.

Men’s Golf: Tuesday, March 31the men’s golf team sank a solid victory at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State University. The Hatters finished 18 over par for 54 holes, four strokes in front of Murray State and 29th nationally ranked ETSU.  Senior Tommy Parker tied for the individual title with ETSU’s Seamus Power, the nation’s 38th-ranked golfer by GolfWeek.com.
