Phase I of the New Science Center was officially dedicated on Saturday, March 21. The 22,074 square foot addition increases the space for science at the university by fifty percent and enhances the hands-on approach to science, making it a valuable new asset to the university. President Douglas H. Lee said, "Since construction started, this facility has been so impressive that applications for students majoring in science has tripled."
According to Dr. Grady Ballinger, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, this addition is a chance "for liberal arts students to encounter new realms of scientific understanding and for liberal science students to pursue their passion rounded in this institution's values of service and environmental responsibility."
US Representative, John L. Mica, who helped with the project, as well as President Elect Wendy Libby and her husband attended the dedication. Dr. Terry Farrell, a science professor who played a large role in the conception and construction of the addition, said, "We hope this addition will help for a learning community of scholars. That's what we're doing here – developing a learning community. It's what Stetson is all about."
