Approximately $800 worth of software and equipment used to host WHAT radio was stolen, forcing the Stetson radio station to temporarily shut down.

“Our computer was stolen from the station on March 9 between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m.” WHAT Radio Chair Alex Harney said. “The last DJ to see the computer was Dr. King, who hosts a punk music segment from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays.”

The stolen computer, a Mac mini, and the software were essential to the day-to-day functions of WHAT radio.

“The entire system was run off of this and a monitor, which is still in the WHAT Room.” Green Hat Media President Jana Fisher said.

WHAT Radio filed reports with both Public Safety and Deland Police Department to no avail.

“We filled out a statement and they said if they’d call if they heard anything” Harney said. “They later called to say they probably wouldn’t find it.”

Both students and faculty utilize the equipment on a daily basis as they host various radio shows. The computer was discovered missing by Jack Kelly and Anthony Salvatore as they arrived to broadcast their show.

The office was spotless other than the missing equipment, and all other items within the office were still present. The doors and locks were also intact. Kelly stated that the theft was slightly strange.

“Everything we normally use was there, but the equipment was taken” Kelly said. “It’s just surprising because there are two code doors to get in there.”

WHAT Radio has already taken steps to replace the Mac mini and get the station back to broadcasting. “Since WHAT Radio is completely shut down without it, we've already ordered another one” Fisher said.
